The Cottrell-Lovett Collection emphasizes the importance of building a deeper understanding of the artists’ work by first cultivating relationships with the artists themselves, allowing the collection to grow as the artists develop their own working philosophy.


The Collectors

Dr. James E. Cottrell is a Distinguished Service Professor and Chairman of Anesthesiology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. He is a Past President of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and in 2010 was awarded that national organization’s highest honor, The Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Cottrell was the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology and helped found the subspecialty of neuroanesthesiology. Dr. Cottrell serves as an At-Large Member of the New York State Board of Regents, is a founding chair of the AIDS Action Foundation and served on the Board of God’s Love We Deliver for many years.

Joseph Lovett is an award-winning documentary filmmaker. After working at ABC News 20/20 as director/producer, Lovett founded Lovett Stories and Strategies in 1989 and has produced such films as Gay Sex in the 70s and Going Blind. In 2001, Lovett won a Peabody Award and received an Emmy nomination for writing, producing and directing HBO’s Cancer: Evolution to Revolution. Over the years, Lovett has been honored with numerous awards from advocacy organizations, including the AIDS Leadership Award, the Christopher Award, and the Kitty Carlisle Hart Award. He is currently working on the film Children of the Inquisition.

Together, they have been collecting art for more than forty years and have amassed a collection numbering more than 600 objects.
